Can Modern Design be Functional?

On the Homes by Architects Tour, one thing you can count on each year is seeing a wide variety of home styles. When considering which architectural style is most relevant for your home and lifestyle, this tour can give you an inside peek at what it’s really like to live with a particular architectural style.

A misconception many people have about modern design is that it is stark, non-functional, and incapable of blending in with more traditional surroundings. This year’s tour showcases a handful of modern home designs that could prove to shatter that misconception. The owners of Home #11 challenged the design team at Peterssen/Keller Architecture to create a home with modern living spaces that fit within a neighborhood of smaller, older homes. The final design organizes living spaces in an efficient, yet functional manner while matching the scale and materiality of the neighborhood, which the homeowners describe as a “livable work of art.”

Home #1, designed by ALTUS Architecture + Design, similarly uses volumes to organize living spaces for a family of eight, using materials on the exterior to visually define the interior spaces. The architect moved private living spaces to the second level in order to provide separation from the more public areas of the home, which are grouped on the first floor with easy access to a lap pool and the lakefront. This home provides the functional living space needed when eight family members share a home, yet serves as a visually stunning addition to the neighborhood.

Advance tour tickets may be purchased online or at AIA Minnesota beginning in August for $15 (until 2 p.m. on September 18). They will also be available at each home during tour weekend for $20 for a full ticket or $10 for an individual home.
