Coastal Style

There’s a reason so many people head to the beach when they want to relax and unwind. The blue of the sky and ocean, the soft texture and color of sand, the warm breezes and bright white sunshine are simultaneously calming and energizing. Many would agree it’s an ideal environment. That may be why coastal style is increasingly popular in homes where there’s not a coast in sight. Contemporary coastal style is less kitschy than it used to be with fewer fishing nets, ship wheels and starfish shaped soaps and more bright finishes and understated elements that give a feeling of the beach rather than a play by play “here are things you see at the beach” approach. Coastal decor is comfortable and casual but still crisp and chic with the following recurring themes.

Blue

From cobalt to turquoise, nothing says beach like blue. Whether it’s furniture, wallpaper or accessories, there are a lot of ways to bring the ocean and sky inside in a big or small way.

Light Wood Tones

Think of wood that’s been naturally bleached by the sun and salt of the ocean, like driftwood or an old dock. Light wood compliments blue tones and evokes the look of sand.

Natural Fibers

The color and rustic texture of jute and seagrass are classic, casual and the rugs feel great underfoot.

White

White finishes provide brightness and a clean backdrop that allows other colors to pop. While yesterday’s coastal white was distressed and shabby-chic, today’s is fresh and polished.

Glass

For sparkle, nothing beats clean, clear glass in light fixtures and accessories like hurricane style candle holders and vases.

Coastal style can also be seasonal style—with a few bright throw rugs, white slipcovers and a few accessories you can easily transform your space into a summertime “north coast” retreat. Perfect for our own, albeit much briefer, beach weather.
