Outdoor Rugs

Designers have long known that rugs are an easy way to bring color, pattern, warmth and texture to interiors. Rugs also help define living spaces, particularly in open-concept floor plans. Their versatility combined with the trend of connecting a homes indoor and outdoor space has made them more popular for outdoor use, and you can now find them in a wide range of styles and colors.

Most outdoor rugs are made from polypropylene, a non toxic fiber that resists fading, stains, water, mildew, mold and cleans up easily, or natural materials such as jute and sisal. Keep in mind that rugs made from natural fibers won’t hold up as well to the elements and should be reserved for covered/sheltered areas. You can buy rug pads specifically made for outdoor use to layer underneath that provide additional comfort and prevent slipping. Here are a few that are so good-looking, you may want to keep them inside.

This cheerful rug from Dash and Albert looks like pretty white flowers against an indigo background. It would work well in a contemporary or traditional setting and is easy to maintain with vacuuming or gentle shake, and can be washed off with a hose. Yes, with a hose!

This mosaic rug in light, earthy tones from Pier One would look great laid out on the grass for a Bohemian picnic or in a cozy seating area on the porch.

Sisal rugs are inexpensive and offer a classic look. This one from Home Depot is the color of beach sand and would feel great underfoot.
