jen-Ziemer_Fiddlehead-Design-Group_HeadshotThis post is a part of a series that gives an inside look behind the creative process of homes featured on the upcoming ASID MN Kitchen Tour  on April 18-19, 2015. You’ll get to see each designer’s challenges and joys behind creating the perfect kitchen for their client.

Today, we’re featuring the work of Jen Ziemer of Fiddlehead Design Group.

Below: The kitchen before the remodel

Fiddlehead-Design-Minnehaha_Kitchen-Before_XAbout the kitchen:

This 1930’s kitchen was a source of stress for this growing family. Both avid cooks, the homeowners had very different working styles and tastes. His, clean lines and industrial. Hers, old-world with a touch of bling! After moving a few walls, redirecting traffic flow and selecting a palette of updated materials, we found an eclectic blend that met all of their needs. We even got lucky, discovering beautiful hardwood floors as well as an original chimney that we decided to expose for added interest!

What was your design dilemma?

Two people who love to cook with very different design taste. She, Old-World.  He, Industrial.  We also had a very awkward layout to address in an older home.

Tell us about your sources of inspiration for this project.

The homeowners had very specific requirements and lots of photos, clippings, and sketches for us to pull together.  They had been dreaming of this kitchen for a very long time!

Tell us about the biggest challenge you encountered while executing the project and how did you overcome it?

Asbestos was found that hit our budget and our timeline. We were under the gun time-wise as the client was expecting her second baby. Things come up on every job especially when we work on older homes. It’s more of an opportunity rather than a challenge, and we love problem solving on the go. The results can turn out better than the original plan!

What part of this project are you most proud of?

We had very happy clients at the end of the job and I think we are most proud of the way we were able to blend the industrial look the husband wanted with the old world look the wife dreamed of.
