SOL Organics: Fair-Trade, Luxury Organic Sheets, Accessibly Priced

by Jahna Peloquin

As awareness of the use of pesticides in traditional cotton farming increases, more consumers are moving toward organic products. A pesticide-intensive crop, conventional cotton uses more than an average amount of pesticides, which are harmful to both our skin and the environment.

But while the interest in organic cotton bedding is growing, their expense is a major barrier for consumers. Fair-trade, organic cotton sets by brands such as Boll & Branch and Coyuchi start at $240 — more than three times that of regular sheet sets.

That’s where SOL Organics comes in. At $119 for a queen set and $139 for a king set (after a $30 instant savings), the new, Minnesota-based brand’s prices are 30 to 50 percent less than comparable products online, and about the same price as organic cotton products by Pottery Barn and Target, which unlike that of SOL Organics, are not guaranteed to be fair-trade. (Child labor is common in India, where more than 20 percent of the world's cotton is grown and where SOL sources its fair-trade, organic cotton.)

The company, which stands for Sustained Organic Living, is able to keep its prices low by offering products directly to consumers via its own e-commerce site, effectively cutting out the middleman, and by doing less of a markup on the cost of cotton’s premium. At the wholesale level, organic, fair-trade cotton costs only about 15 percent more than conventional cotton; SOL Organics doubles the cost of the goods for its retail price while competitors triple the cost.

While still nearly double what a conventional sheet set costs at Kohl's or J.C. Penney, savvy shoppers are sure to appreciate SOL Organics’ high quality — these sheets are incredibly soft, and get better with every wash and are free of harmful chemicals  — and its ethical standards. You spend a third of your life in bed — why not spend it with sheets that are not only luxurious, but also safe and ethically made?
