A lack of counter space and storage, inadequate lighting, and dated finishes in this turn-of-the-century Victorian kitchen masked its true potential. The homeowners, busy professionals with three children, hired Kate Roos Design, in collaboration with Terra Firma, to create a bright open space with traditional elements that could handle everyday family life as well as social gatherings. The entire kitchen was reconfigured to open the space and incorporate a 36-inch range and hood vent, 42-inch high ledge to hold shallow bottles of oil or spices, and a freestanding hutch in gray-stained quarter-sewn white oak, contrasting nicely with the pale gray cabinetry. Marble countertops, light bronze hardware, and handmade tile add sophisticated elements to this traditional design, while the apron front sink and bay window overlooking the backyard creates a beautiful focal point upon entering the kitchen.
