With its classic white columns, red roof, loggia (covered exterior patio), balcony, stucco walls, arches, and simple landscaping—this Mediterranean-style home, situated along a quiet tree-lined street across from the Mississippi River, evokes images of olive groves and turquoise seas. It really makes a statement here in Minnesota.

Making a statement comes naturally to Ben Richter and Chris Van Klei of Detail Homes, whose outside-the-box homes—the majority located in the St. Paul neighborhoods of Crocus Hill, Macalester-Groveland, Highland, Summit, or along the river—are anything but cookie-cutter.

They not only deliver exceptional homes, but believe in using products true to the neighborhoods during the particular era a home was built, or—if that’s not a feasible option—go to extreme lengths to find new products that look and feel like the original materials. In this case, they partnered with talented local residential design studio Charlie & Co. Design to perfect classic architectural elements both on the exterior and inside. The open, airy interior, with clean lines and ornamental details, has both a contemporary edge and fresh vibe.

Memorable details can be seen throughout the five-bedroom, five-bathroom, 5,235-square-foot home, from the Gothic arch shape of the doorways, carried to the Gothic arch handmade metal railing, to the center island with intricately carved legs, a pattern that’s repeated in the custom cabinetry of the powder room and master bath.

With a supreme location across the street from the river, the home was designed with a connection to outdoor spaces. This is evident not only in the loggia, but also the sun-filled panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass flex space off the kitchen, and master suite bedroom tower, with 270-degree treetop views.

This elegant and timeless house looks right at home here in St. Paul, like it could have been built more than 200 years ago.
