We all know that the designers and creators in Minnesota are incredibly talented. Here at Midwest Home, we know because we showcase the beautiful work made in the Midwest in every issue and blog post. But it’s not every day that a Minnesotan is chosen to design a celebrity’s nursery and is featured in a national news outlet.
Talent, hard work, and connections get you places, and that is the case with Laura Wiedmann of Laura Wiedmann Interior Design in Minneapolis. Wiedmann recently designed the baby nursery for Jordin Sparks, winner of the sixth season of American Idol, and her work was featured in People magazine.
Once Sparks, 28, and her husband Dana Isaiah, 26, found out that they were pregnant, they called Wiedmann right away. Sparks and Wiedmann are cousins and talk with each other almost every day. “She has wanted me to design her home for years and this was the perfect moment for me to step in and help with their home,” Wiedmann says.
Throughout Sparks’ pregnancy, Wiedmann worked remotely on the project. The inspiration behind the space was “timeless and sophisticated with a splash of whimsy and edge,” which is “very Jordin,” Wiedmann notes. Sparks’ home is midcentury modern in style, and the nursery fits right in with the rest of the home.
Wiedmann used a neutral palette (grays, black, and off-whites) and added other colors like soft blues and pops of red to build color within the space. Using nature as her inspiration, she selected celestial shapes such as the sun, moon, and stars, and added stuffed animals, soft blankets, and botanicals in the space.
Sparks and her husband loved working with Wiedmann. Sparks’ testimonial on Wiedmann’s website says it all:
“I have been wanting to work with Laura for the greater part of the last 10 years. When my husband and I found out our son was coming, we knew that we wanted a beautiful nursery that was well done and put together. …We live in LA and most of the work was done cross country and under a deadline. …[B]ut she was able to complete, what is now, what we know as the best room in the house. It’s exactly what we envisioned; peaceful, serene, fun, and is able to grow with our little boy for years to come. We love it!”
Sparks went into labor during one of Wiedmann’s last visits, so the designer was able to prep the nursery to perfection—all the way up until Sparks and her husband returned home with baby DJ. “It was exciting to be a part of their experience and send them off to the birthing center,” Wiedmann says.
Having a prepped space for a return from the hospital—and a thoughtful last touch on the nursery from a loved one—is all you need.
